Publicly, Representatives are touting "national security" on the urban legend issue, but privately they say the real reason is preventing embarrassment. In January, a bill almost made it out of committee that would've forced Starbucks to sell coffee to the armed forces in Iraq. The bill was in response to a hoax circulating in e-mail that Starbucks was refusing to provide coffee to the army, because it did not support the war. Fortunately, a staffer found the hoax debunked on a web site, before the bill made it to the floor for a vote.

Snopes.com people! Seriously. I love this part:

'The ACLU contends that this law would violate free speech rights. "Congress cannot limit constitutionally guaranteed rights, just because they are too dumb to realize something is a piece of fiction. We are confident the law will be overturned," said Chief Counsel Elliott Spence.' [all emphasis and disdain mine]

We can't regulate stupidity. Dude!

Seems several airlines are now giving your pets frequent flyer miles. Oh great. More yippy dogs in first class.

How very sad. It seems that Jerry Orbach has died. A fine actor, and a wonderful Broadway performer.

I'm actually rather proud of this dad: His young sons weren't learning the true meaning of Christmas, so he sold their big Nintendo gift on eBay. It sounds harsh, but I say good for him! Appreciation and empathy for others less fortunate strike me as great gifts to give your kids.

Even better, the online casino that has been buying odd eBay offerings, like the Virgin Mary toasted cheese sandwich and the little boy's cane, bid $3500 for his gift, with the proviso that the family use the money for charity. They plan to use it to help their church--and the casino plans to give the Nintendo set to a needy family who couldn't otherwise get one (think about that, kids). Now that's the Christmas spirit.
