Put everything you really, really need to get through a couple of days in your carryon bag. That way you at least won't have to go scrounging for clean clothes and toothpaste at 2 in the morning in a strange city where no one speaks English.

That is my current plan. I travel a lot, and have this down to, if not a science, at least a strongly held philosophy

I just use www.bagsreunited.com it's what the site is designed for - getting your luggage back. I put a label on the luggage tag and one on the inside. It's not going to stop you losing your bags but it's going to help get them back. It's a Uk site I think but has worked for me when i lost my luggage at JFC - got a text message alert as well, very slick.
