My buddy Todd G. sent me to this very sensible article from his hometown paper on taking the holidays at a reasonable and sane pace. A very nice idea.

I'm doing less this year, though not the bare minimum, and feel rather overwhelmed. I swear if anyone comes near me with some mistletoe or a holly wreath, I'm gonna lose it. I think, perhaps, that I expended all of my emotional energy on the election, with little left over for the holidays.

Bush has officially won Iowa. Senator Kerry, I'm so very sorry. We really tried. It was very close.

Kerry was here in Iowa on Friday for a quite heartfelt and sweet 'thank you' speech (no, I'm not in the photo, but I did get my face on local TV, so my friends tell me). I got to speak with Teresa for about 10 minutes about the electoral nonsense in Ohio and elsewhere--that is one determined lady! I'll be interested to see what she and others manage to get sorted out by '06.

On one list in which I participate we were having a rather facetious discussion about what our motto or slogan would be at our respective libraries. "Abandon all hope, ye who enter here" was one suggestion

Someone in circulation found the following statement for the Reference Desk, and I thought it was hilarious:

I fully realize that I have not succeeded in answering all of your questions... indeed, I feel that I have not answered any of them completely. The answers I have found only serve to raise a whole new set of questions, which only lead to more problems--some of which we weren't aware were problems. To sum it all up...in some ways I feel we are as confused as ever, but I believe we are confused on a higher level and about more important things.

I just got an Xmas card from my Democratic Senator, Tom Harkin. I've always liked him well enough. For a politician, he's a quite decent guy.

The message with the card is very thoughtful, along the lines of "we all have disappointments in an election year, but we're committed" and so forth. The picture is from his daughter's graduation from Princeton this year. Also pictured are his wife, Ruth, other daughter, Amy and (I believe) her husband, Steve. Why do I mention this? Cuz he sent this out to his Dem constituents--and Amy has bright red dyed hair. Think Jennifer Garner in Alias. It's very cute, but in some political circles would be frowned upon, and would raise an eyebrow or two in small town Iowa. But they sent it anyway. I don't know, it just struck me as typical of the guy's lack of pretension that he didn't send some posed photographer's portrait.

JaBba just turned me on to this newest of the Google-related games (a la Googlism): Google Guessing. Instructions at Whatever.
